Carpal Tunnel Surgery

Carpal tunnel syndrome is a common, painful hand condition which occurs when the median nerve of the hand is compressed at the wrist. Our orthopedic surgeons and plastic surgeons work closely together to provide the highest quality specialty hand care to our patients.

Symptoms & Causes

Carpal tunnel symptoms include numbness, weakness, tingling or pain in the hand and fingers, and can often keep awake patients at night. Diabetes, pregnancy, arthritis, obesity or excessive use of the hands and wrists in the workplace or in exercise can cause carpal tunnel syndrome. Age can also be a factor, with your chances of developing carpal tunnel increasing with age. While carpal tunnel can be common for people who spend many hours daily at a desk, carpal tunnel syndrome can occur for others who use their hands and wrists extensively at work or in play.

Treatment Options

There are a number of options available for those with carpal tunnel syndrome depending on the severity of symptoms and the success of less advanced treatments.

  • Medication and lifestyle changes – An orthopedic doctor may prescribe medication to reduce inflammation and certain changes to your work, exercise or lifestyle habits to improve pressure on your wrists.
  • Splints – Our providers may fit you with a splint to wear on your wrist, which may correct the issue.
  • Joint injections – Commonly used to easy pain and reduce swelling in joints, cortisone injections can successfully manage pain for some people.
  • Carpal tunnel surgery – Our experienced surgeons can typically perform carpal tunnel surgery as an outpatient procedure, correcting the issue by widening the tunnel in your wrist to decrease pressure on the nerves and tendons that travel to your hand. Like most hand and upper extremity surgeries, physical therapy is key in a successful recovery from carpal tunnel surgery. This includes getting patients back to work and fully active in a timely manner through occupational therapy.
