Laminectomy

Laminectomy is a surgical procedure that relieves pressure on the spinal cord or nerves by removing a small section of bone called the lamina. This pressure is often caused by conditions such as spinal stenosis, herniated discs, bone spurs or degenerative changes in the spine.

As one of the top neurosciences program in the region, Northeast Georgia Health System brings together neurosurgeons and spine specialists to provide advanced surgical techniques for spine conditions. We perform laminectomies that reduce pain, restore movement and improve overall quality of life for patients living with chronic back or neck pain.

What conditions can require a laminectomy?

The spine naturally changes with age, and conditions that cause narrowing of the spinal canal can put pressure on the spinal cord and nerves. Laminectomy may be recommended to treat:

  • Spinal stenosis
  • Herniated or bulging discs
  • Bone spurs (osteophytes)
  • Degenerative disc disease
  • Spinal tumors or cysts

In many cases, non-surgical treatments such as medication, physical therapy or epidural injections can help manage symptoms. However, if these treatments do not provide adequate relief and nerve compression continues to cause pain, weakness or difficulty walking, laminectomy may be the next step.

Symptoms of spinal nerve compression

When nerves in the spine are compressed, patients may experience:

  • Persistent back or neck pain
  • Numbness or tingling in the arms, legs or feet
  • Weakness in the limbs
  • Pain that radiates down the arms or legs (sciatica or radiculopathy)
  • Difficulty standing or walking for long periods

If these symptoms interfere with daily life or do not improve with conservative care, it may be time to discuss surgical options with a spine specialist.

How laminectomy works

A laminectomy involves removing part or all of the lamina, the back portion of the vertebra that covers the spinal canal. This creates more space around the spinal cord and nerve roots, relieving pressure that causes pain and limited mobility.

During the procedure, the surgeon makes a small incision in the back or neck and carefully removes the bone or tissue pressing on the nerves. In some cases, a laminectomy is performed alongside other procedures, such as removing a herniated disc (discectomy) or stabilizing the spine with fusion surgery.

Laminectomy can be performed using minimally invasive techniques, reducing incision size and recovery time. Most patients stay in the hospital for one night and begin light activity soon after surgery, with physical therapy helping restore strength and flexibility.

Benefits of laminectomy

Laminectomy can significantly reduce nerve-related pain and improve mobility, especially in patients who have not found relief through other treatments. The benefits may include:

  • Relief from leg or arm pain caused by nerve compression
  • Improved strength and mobility
  • Better posture and flexibility
  • Reduced numbness or tingling sensations
  • A more active, comfortable lifestyle
