Epilepsy Diagnosis & Treatment

Epilepsy is a neurological condition that causes recurring seizures due to sudden bursts of abnormal electrical activity in the brain. Many people manage epilepsy with medication, but some require specialized testing or other advanced treatments to achieve seizure control.

At Northeast Georgia Health System our neurologists, epileptologists and neurophysiology specialists work together to evaluate and treat epilepsy. We offer advanced diagnostic imaging, inpatient and outpatient monitoring, all coordinated within our neuroscience program.

Epilepsy Monitoring Unit (EMU)

NGHS offers a specialized Epilepsy Monitoring Unit (EMU). This inpatient unit designed to diagnose and evaluate seizure disorders, particularly in cases where the cause is unclear or seizures are difficult to manage.

The EMU uses continuous video EEG monitoring (cEEG) over several days to help:

  • Identify the type and source of seizures
  • Distinguish epileptic seizures from other neurological conditions
  • Determine if another treatment may help

Epilepsy Diagnostics

Accurate diagnosis is essential for determining the best treatment plan for epilepsy. At NGHS we use a combination of advanced imaging, neurophysiology and laboratory testing to identify the source of seizures and guide care decisions.

Our Imaging Centers are located throughout the region, making it easier for patients to access high-quality scans and diagnostic services close to home.

MRI

MRI uses strong magnets and radio waves to create detailed images of the brain’s structure. This can help identify abnormalities such as scar tissue, brain malformations or tumors that may be causing seizures. Our high-resolution MRI technology allows physicians to view the brain in fine detail for more precise diagnosis.

PET/CT Scan

A PET/CT scan combines two types of imaging to provide both structural and functional information about the brain. It can detect areas with unusual metabolism or activity that may be the source of seizures, even when structural imaging looks normal.

Neuropsychological Testing

Neuropsychological evaluation measures cognitive functions such as memory, problem-solving, language skills and attention. These tests can reveal how seizures are affecting brain function and help determine which areas of the brain may be involved.

Laboratory Testing

Blood tests and other lab studies can identify underlying conditions that may contribute to seizures, such as infections, metabolic disorders or electrolyte imbalances. These results help rule out other causes and ensure the treatment plan addresses all potential factors.
