Lung Nodule Pathway Program

Proactively detecting and treating lung nodules for better outcomes

Lung cancer is most treatable when detected early. NGMC’s Lung Nodule Pathway Program is designed to shift diagnoses from late-stage to early-stage, significantly improving the chances of a cure. Our advanced imaging technology and minimally invasive procedures ensures patients receive timely evaluations and personalized care.

Comprehensive lung nodule care

Our program goes beyond routine lung cancer screenings by proactively navigating incidental lung nodules. Incidental lung nodules are small masses or spots that are found in the lungs by chance – usually during imaging rests like a chest X-ray or CT scan done for unrelated reasons. Whether identified through low-dose CT scans or found incidentally during imaging for other conditions, each lung nodule is carefully assessed by a multidisciplinary team of specialists. This team reviews the imaging and medical history to determine the most appropriate next steps for evaluation and treatment.

Lung cancer screenings

Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in America. Unfortunately, lung cancer often has few to no symptoms until its fairly advanced, and routine screenings for lung cancer have not been common, leading to high mortality rates. Luckily, thanks to new screening options, lung cancer is increasingly being diagnosed earlier, when most treatable.

Lung cancer can be detected through low-dose CT scans, which provides detailed images of your lungs while minimizing radiation exposure. During the scan:

  • You lie still on a table that slides through a donut-shaped machine
  • The CT scanner rotates around you, taking multiple X-ray images
  • No injections or special preparations are needed
  • The entire procedure typically takes less than five minutes

Expert evaluation, treatment and second opinions

Our team includes pulmonologists, thoracic surgeons, oncologists and radiologists who collaborate to provide:

  • Comprehensive lung nodule risk assessment and patient education
  • Advanced imaging and diagnostic procedures, including Ion robotic bronchoscopy
  • Expedited biopsy and treatment planning
  • Seamless coordination with primary care physicians and referring providers

Need a second opinion on a recent scan? Our expert team of pulmonologists are here to help.

With the addition of the Ion robotic-assisted bronchoscopy system and the da Vinci 5 robotic-assisted surgical system, we offer minimally invasive lung nodule biopsy and lung cancer treatment options that enhance precision and improve recovery times for eligible patients.

Innovative Technology: Ion Robotic Bronchoscopy

Our program utilizes the Ion robotic-assisted bronchoscopy system, a state-of-the-art technology that allows for minimally invasive lung nodule biopsies with greater precision. The Ion system features a flexible robotic catheter that provides enhanced reach and stability, enabling our specialists to navigate deep into the lung with unprecedented accuracy. This advanced approach improves diagnostic yield, reduces complications and allows for earlier lung cancer diagnosis and treatment.

What happens after a lung nodule is found?
  1. Detection – A lung nodule is identified through lung cancer screening or incidental imaging.
  2. Multidisciplinary Review – Our team of lung specialists reviews the nodule’s characteristics and patient history.
  3. Personalized Recommendations – We determine the best course of action, whether it’s continued lung nodule monitoring, further testing, or a biopsy.
  4. Expedited Care – If intervention is needed, we ensure prompt access to diagnostic procedures and lung cancer treatment.
  5. Ongoing Follow-Up – Patients receive continued lung nodule surveillance to track changes over time.

Why choose NGMC’s lung nodule pathway program?
