What is hepatobiliary cancer?
Hepatobiliary cancer is a term used to describe cancers that begin in the liver, bile ducts, gallbladder or pancreas. These cancers may be primary (originating in the organ) or secondary (spreading from another part of the body). The hepatobiliary system is responsible for producing, storing and transporting bile, a substance that helps digest fats.
Because these organs are closely connected, cancers in this region often require a team-based approach for accurate diagnosis and effective treatment.
Symptoms of liver and hepatobiliary cancers may not appear until the disease has progressed, but some people may notice one or more of the following signs:
- Jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes)
- Pain or discomfort in the upper right abdomen
- Nausea or vomiting
- Loss of appetite
- Unintended weight loss
- Fatigue
- Dark urine or pale stools
- Itchy skin
If you experience any of these symptoms, it’s important to talk with your doctor as soon as possible. Early detection can significantly improve treatment outcomes.
Treatment for Liver & Hepatobiliary Cancer
Treatment options depend on the type and stage of cancer, along with each patient’s overall health and goals. NGMC offers:
- Surgery: When possible, surgery may be performed to remove tumors from the liver, gallbladder or bile ducts.
- Chemotherapy and Targeted Therapy: These treatments may be used to shrink tumors, manage symptoms and slow the spread of disease.
- Radiation Therapy: Advanced radiation techniques can help treat tumors in delicate areas of the hepatobiliary system.
- Interventional Radiology: Minimally invasive procedures, such as ablation or embolization, may be used to target tumors directly.
- Histotripsy: Histotripsy uses focused ultrasound to destroy liver cancer cells without incisions, radiation or disrupting ongoing chemotherapy.
