More people now have access to the newest and most advanced robotic surgical technology along the Georgia 400 corridor, as the first surgery using a da Vinci surgical system at Northeast Georgia Medical Center (NGMC) Lumpkin was performed this week.

“Robotic surgery has a multitude of benefits including smaller incisions, less chance of complications and a shorter recovery time,” said Kevin Powell, MD, a general surgeon with Northeast Georgia Physicians Group (NGPG) Surgical Associates in Dawsonville and the first surgeon to operate with the da Vinci surgical system at NGMC Lumpkin. “In fact, my patient was discharged the same day as his surgery without the need to stay overnight at the hospital. It’s the commitment to this type of advanced care that attracted me to join Northeast Georgia Health System earlier this year.”

NGMC Lumpkin’s new campus opened in April 2024 along Georgia 400, just south of Highway 60. The hospital includes inpatient and emergency services, imaging, lab and pharmacy support, as well as a variety of surgical options – including Gynecology, Orthopedics, Podiatry, Urogynecology, and General Surgery.

“We are proud to expand robotic surgery beyond Gainesville and Braselton with the addition of a surgical robot at NGMC Lumpkin,” said Parker Long, DO, an OB/GYN with Northeast Georgia Physicians Group (NGPG) and medical director of robotic surgery at NGMC. “Now more people can benefit from the most minimally invasive surgical techniques without having to drive south into Cumming or across the lake to Gainesville.”

NGMC has more than 50 trained surgeons on medical staff who have performed more than 25,000 robotic procedures combined.
