Patients in Demorest have even more to look forward to with Alan Opsahl, MD, joining Georgia Heart Institute. Dr. Opsahl will be dedicated to the Demorest location and practicing Northeast Georgia Medical Center (NGMC) Habersham opening more access to renowned heart care in the Habersham community.

Dr. Opsahl, a non-invasive cardiologist, is making the move south from Keene, New Hampshire, where he cared for patients for nearly 20 years at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center. Previously, he served as a physician in the U.S. Air Force at Davis-Monthan AFB in Arizona after attending medical school at the University of Chicago in Chicago, Illinois.

“I decided to join Georgia Heart Institute to be closer to family in Georgia,” said Dr. Opsahl. “I also have a personal goal to serve local, rural communities with high-quality healthcare, so this group is a great fit for me.” Outside of work, Dr. Opsahl enjoys traveling, learning about other cultures, and playing basketball. He’s also looking forward to immersing himself in the Habersham community and connecting with the people and activities the area has to offer.

“Dr. Opsahl’s passion for rural medicine and extensive experience as a cardiologist is exactly what we were looking for when considering someone to care for the Demorest area,” said Habib Samady, MD, interventional cardiologist, and president of Georgia Heart Institute. “He sincerely cares about meeting individuals where they’re at, working with the excellent medical staff at NGMC Habersham, and bringing excellent heart care closer to home.”
