Behavioral Health Services

If you’ve ever experienced a mental health issue, you aren’t alone.

In fact, nearly one in five U.S. adults is currently living with a mental health illness. This may include conditions like depression, anxiety or a personality disorder, as well as substance abuse and addiction. Many of these conditions are not purely mental or emotional. They can have a far-reaching impact on overall quality of life and physical wellness. And the fact remains that many individuals experiencing mental health issues go without the care or support they need. You don’t have to face this on your own.

Our Services

To ensure that you receive the compassionate and whole-person care you need, several programs across NGHS have come together to create a comprehensive network of resources and services. This includes our inpatient facility, Laurelwood, as well as the psychiatric and behavioral health practices of Northeast Georgia Physicians Group, and other community-based initiatives, all working together to help you thrive.

Behavioral Health Therapists

Behavioral Health therapists are licensed clinical social workers (LCSW) who diagnose and treat mental disorders and behavioral problems using various forms of cognitive therapy.

They can help patients learn to deal with stressful events, overcome addictions or manage illnesses. People may seek counseling for traumatic experiences, like a death in the family or chronic conditions, like depression or anxiety.

For some patients and/or certain diagnoses, utilizing medication and working with a psychiatrist may be more appropriate.

Medical Psychiatrists

Psychiatrists are medical doctors who specialize in the study, diagnosis, prevention and treatment of emotional, mental, behavioral, and developmental issues.

They can help to diagnose and treat a variety of different conditions. Rather than using talk therapy to treat mental health issues, they will focus on identifying chemical imbalances in the brain. These imbalances may be the underlying cause of a condition and may be effectively treated with proper medication.

For some patients and/or certain diagnoses, utilizing talk or cognitive therapy and working with a behavioral health specialist may be more appropriate.

Inpatient Care

For those patients needing a more intensive level of care, their doctor may believe that inpatient care is necessary.

Laurelwood is located at NGMC Gainesville specializing in the stabilization and treatment of individuals with mental illness and/or substance abuse.

The psychiatrists and mental health care team at Laurelwood provide patients with a comprehensive and holistic therapeutic experience.
