New, larger emergency department opens at NGMC Braselton to care for more people

Northeast Georgia Medical Center’s (NGMC) new emergency department in Braselton is now open. The improved space includes a waiting room that’s doubled in size and twice the number of treatment rooms to care for patients and families across South Hall, Gwinnett, Jackson and Barrow counties.

“We’re extremely excited to better serve the growing needs of the surrounding community,” said Angela Gary, chief nursing officer for NGMC Braselton. “Our team of experts will provide the same, compassionate care as always, but we’ll be able to do it more efficiently and in a beautiful new space that’s a little more comfortable and private for patients.”

The emergency department expansion added 27 additional treatment rooms – including two dedicated trauma rooms, four resuscitation rooms, six behavioral health treatment rooms and a dedicated stroke assessment room – as well as an additional CT scan suite to speed up diagnoses and treatment. The increased space spans more than 180,000 square feet to care for people with serious illnesses and injuries.

The project was part of a larger hospital campus expansion which also includes four new operating rooms, increasing access to surgeries and other critical procedures. Plus, a new ambulance bay and helipad with a direct route to trauma services will help paramedics and EMTs move patients to life-saving care as quickly as possible.

“The previous emergency department was never meant to be used for the number of patients we’ve seen in recent years,” said Douglas Morrison, MD, medical director of the Emergency Department at NGMC Braselton. “So, we truly appreciate each and every patient who trusted us with their care as we provided excellent clinical care in cramped quarters. I think patients will see this new space was worth the wait.”

Since opening in 2015, NGMC Braselton and the surrounding area have seen extreme growth. NGMC Braselton has continued to grow with it throughout the years, bringing interventional cardiology, the latest surgeries and surgical technology, a dedicated cancer treatment center and more.

“This latest expansion is a perfect example of our mission, which is improving the health of our community in all we do,” said Matt Hanley, MD, president and CEO of Northeast Georgia Health System. “It’s also part of our vision to provide excellent clinical care, be the best place to give and receive care, and be the best run health system in Georgia.”
