This year’s annual Northeast Georgia Health System (NGHS) Foundation Cheryl Shippey Memorial golf tournament, held at Chateau Elan in partnership with presenting sponsor, Jackson EMC, raised more than $330,000 to support the expansion of the emergency department at Northeast Georgia Medical Center (NGMC) Braselton.
The tournament was named in memory of Cheryl Shippey, a member of the NGHS Foundation team, who unexpectedly passed away in March 2023. Cheryl was a fundraising professional who cared deeply about the impact of philanthropy on our community.
“Cheryl would be ecstatic if she could see the community turnout for the tournament,” said Jim Edwards, co-chair of the tournament committee. “Cheryl’s commitment to community excellence is seen in everyone who is here today, just proving she lives on in us all.”
NGMC Braselton opened in 2015 with an emergency department designed to handle 25,000 visits a year, but annual visits have more than doubled in less than a decade as the population around the hospital continues to boom. The expansion, set to open later this summer, will more than triple the square footage and double the number of patient rooms.
“I’ve always enjoyed supporting my community, and the opportunity to be involved with this special event is truly an honor,” said Audra Edwards, co-chair of the tournament committee. “Every year, I know Cheryl would be proud of the work we’ve done and all the people we have been able to help in her name.”
More than 120 golfers participated in the tournament. NGHS is grateful to those sponsors, volunteers and participants who made the day a tremendous success.
