NGMC endoscopy team and leadership celebrate 100 histotripsy procedures.
Patients in Georgia continue to benefit from a groundbreaking, non-invasive cancer treatment option offered by Northeast Georgia Health System (NGHS), which has now successfully completed over 100 histotripsy procedures. Northeast Georgia Medical Center (NGMC) Gainesville is the only hospital in the state—and one of the few worldwide—to offer this advanced treatment.
Histotripsy is an ultrasound-guided technology that uses focused sound waves to precisely break down targeted tissue without incisions or radiation. This innovative approach provides patients with faster recovery times, reduced pain and minimized risk compared to traditional treatment methods.

“We are proud to be at the forefront of this revolutionary technology,” said Nelson Royall, MD, a surgeon with Northeast Georgia Physicians Group (NGPG). “Being the only hospital in Georgia offering histotripsy means we can provide patients with access to a minimally invasive alternative that delivers exceptional results with fewer side effects.”
“Completing more than 100 histotripsy procedures is proof that patients are looking for this type of treatment, and some are traveling from as far away as Nevada for care,” said Terence Jackson, MD, a surgeon with NGPG. “We are excited to continue expanding its use, providing more patients with an option that potentially improves outcomes while minimizing disruption to their lives and current treatments.”

NGHS also holds the distinction of being the first in the world to offer a clinical trial for histotripsy, known as BOOMBOX, demonstrating its commitment to advancing medical innovation and expanding treatment options for patients facing complex conditions. NGHS’ highly skilled cancer services team continues to lead research and clinical advancements in histotripsy.
