Shoulder pain can make everyday tasks harder. If you’ve been told you need a shoulder replacement or recently had a shoulder replacement, you may be wondering: how long does a shoulder replacement last?

The short answer: Most shoulder replacements last 10 to 15 years. Some last even longer, depending on your age, activity level and how well you care for your new joint.

Types of shoulder replacement

There are several types of shoulder replacement, each designed to treat different kinds of damage or shoulder problems. Some may last a little longer than others, depending on how much stress the joint goes through over time.

  • Total shoulder replacement replaces both the ball (top of the upper arm bone) and the socket (shoulder blade). This option usually works best for people with arthritis or joint damage but who still have healthy rotator cuffs.

When paired with rehab, total shoulder replacements tend to last a long time and offer good range of motion when rehab is followed.

  • Partial shoulder replacement replaces only the ball of the joint. It is usually recommended when only part of the shoulder is damaged and the socket is still intact, such as after a fracture.

These may not last as long as a total shoulder replacement, depending on how healthy thenatural socket is and how the joint is used over time.

  • Reverse shoulder replacement is used when the rotator cuff is torn or weak. In this surgery, the ball and socket are switched—placing the ball on the shoulder blade and the socket on the arm bone. This design gives the shoulder more stability without depending on the rotator cuff.

Reverse replacements are very helpful for certain patients, but they may wear out a little sooner if the joint is put under heavy use.

Your surgeon will choose the best type of replacement based on your condition, age and lifestyle.

How long does it last?

Most people can expect their shoulder replacement to last between 10 and 15 years. Some may last even longer, especially if you take care of your shoulder and avoid placing too much stress on it.

Several things can affect how long your shoulder replacement lasts:

  • Age at the time of surgery
A younger patient may tend to be more active, which can cause the joint to wear out faster.
  • Activity level
Heavy lifting or high-impact sports may wear down the joint sooner.
  • Body weight and overall health
Staying at a healthy weight helps reduce stress on joints.
  • Surgical technique and implant materials
Advancements in tools and materials help a shoulder replacement last longer.

Signs your shoulder replacement may need to be checked

A shoulder replacement can loosen, wear down or become damaged over time. If you notice any of the following symptoms, talk to your doctor:

  • New or increased shoulder pain
  • Stiffness or trouble moving your arm
  • Clicking or grinding sounds in your shoulder
  • Swelling or warmth in the joint

Can it be replaced again?

Yes. If your shoulder replacement wears out or has problems, a second surgery may be needed. This is called a reverse shoulder replacement.

These surgeries are more complex than the first, but they can still help reduce pain and improve movement.

How to make your shoulder replacement last longer

You can take steps to make sure your new shoulder stays strong for years:

  • Follow your recovery plan
    • Physical therapy is important for regaining strength and range of motion.
  • Avoid heavy lifting or pushing. These actions can strain your joint.
  • Choose low-impact exercise
    • Walking, swimming and light stretching are good choices.
  • Stay at a healthy weight
    • This helps reduce pressure on your joints.
  • See your doctor regularly
    • Follow-up appointments help track how your shoulder is doing over time.
