NGMC Gainesville’s nuclear cardiology unit achieves accreditation in new Green Tower

Published: Wednesday, June 11, 2025

While the diagnostic heart services at Northeast Georgia Medical Center (NGMC) Gainesville moved to a new home when the Green Tower opened earlier this year, a national group says patients can expect the same high-quality care people have come to trust. The hospital’s nuclear cardiology services were recently re-accredited by the Intersocietal Accreditation Commission (IAC), continuing its streak of accreditation that started 17 years ago.

“IAC accreditation is the gold standard, and it verifies our cardiac imaging departments uphold stringent standards and abide by extensive guidelines for providing the highest-quality patient care,” said Vedang Bhavsar, MD, medical director of Echo/Vascular and Nuclear Cardiology Imaging for NGHS. “This would not be possible without our wonderful front-line technologists, staff and physicians who bring their best every day.”

Nuclear cardiology services include nuclear stress tests and two types of non-invasive imaging. The first are scans that create 3D images of the heart to diagnose common cardiovascular conditions, called SPECT scans. The second, called cardiac PET scans, identify areas where blood flow is blocked in the heart. Both types of imaging help the cardiologists of Georgia Heart Institute make accurate diagnoses and develop detailed treatment plans for their patients.
