Endocrine Surgery at NGHS

Endocrine surgery focuses on treating conditions that affect the body’s hormone producing glands. At Northeast Georgia Health System, our surgeons provide advanced, minimally invasive care for disorders of the thyroid, parathyroid and adrenal glands — combining surgical expertise with the resources of a comprehensive health system.

NGMC Gainesville is the first and only hospital in Georgia to be accredited as a Center of Excellence for Endocrine Surgery.

What Is Endocrine Surgery?

Endocrine surgery involves the evaluation and surgical management of diseases that affect the endocrine glands, which regulate essential body functions through hormone production. These glands include:

  • Thyroid gland – regulates metabolism, heart rate, and energy levels
  • Parathyroid glands – control calcium balance
  • Adrenal glands – produce hormones that manage stress response, blood pressure, and metabolism

Conditions treated by endocrine surgeons often include nodules, tumors (benign or malignant), hormone producing disorders, and gland enlargement.

Northeast Georgia Health System is home to the state of Georgia’s first and only Endocrine Surgery Center of Excellence, recognized for delivering high-quality, evidence based care. Our program is distinguished by:

  • High volume endocrine surgeons with specialized training
  • Advanced imaging and diagnostic capabilities
  • Minimally invasive and organ preserving techniques
  • Comprehensive patient support, from evaluation to longterm followup

Patients benefit from a coordinated, systemwide approach that ensures timely diagnosis, expert surgical care, and seamless access to additional services when needed.

Types of Endocrine Procedures We Offer

Our surgeons specialize in the full spectrum of endocrine procedures, using the latest techniques to reduce recovery time and improve outcomes. Some examples of endocrine procedures our surgeons perform are:

Thyroid Surgery

Treatment for thyroid nodules, goiter, thyroid cancer, and hyperthyroidism. Options include:

  • Thyroid lobectomy
  • Total thyroidectomy
  • Minimally invasive approaches, when appropriate
Parathyroid Surgery

For patients with hyperparathyroidism or parathyroid tumors, our surgeons perform:

  • Minimally invasive parathyroidectomy
  • Focused parathyroid exploration guided by advanced imaging and intraoperative hormone monitoring
Adrenal Surgery

Management of adrenal tumors, hormoneproducing disorders, and adrenal masses using:

  • Laparoscopic adrenalectomy
  • Robotic adrenalectomy for enhanced precision and faster recovery
Thyroid Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA)

A key offering within our program, thyroid RFA is a nonsurgical, outpatient procedure used to shrink benign thyroid nodules without removing the gland. Benefits include:

  • No general anesthesia
  • No surgical incision
  • Minimal downtime
  • Preservation of normal thyroid function

This option is ideal for patients with symptomatic or cosmetically bothersome benign nodules who want to avoid traditional surgery.
