NGHS’ simulation center hosts hands-on human anatomy lab to improve patient care

Resident physicians, medical students, first responders and nursing school students from across the state are learning enhanced life-saving skills to elevate patient care through human donor-based anatomy training provided by Northeast Georgia Health System (NGHS).

The Center for Simulation and Innovation at NGHS recently partnered with the Region 2 Regional Trauma Advisory Committee (RTAC), Georgia Emergency Medical Services Association (GEMSA) and the Medical Education and Research Institute (MERI) to host a hands-on anatomical skills lab. This immersive training provided participants with the rare opportunity to study anatomy using tissue from human donors.

“Human donor-based training is widely regarded as the gold standard in medical education because it provides a level of realism that even the most advanced simulation technology cannot replicate,” said Jim Rinehart, director of clinical skills and simulation for Northeast Georgia Medical Center and its Graduate Medical Education program. “It bridges the gap between theory and practice, preparing providers to deliver exceptional care when it matters most.”

Individuals who choose to donate their bodies to medical education and families who honor those wishes create a legacy.

“The generosity of body donors and their families make experiences like this possible and their impact on the future of healthcare is immeasurable,” said Corey Hill, MSN-Ed,standardized patient educator at the Center for Simulation and Innovation at NGHS. “Events like this are an investment in better outcomes for patients because they equip providers with advanced skills and confidence, making NGHS a stronger and more prepared healthcare system.”
