A family’s guide to hospice care

Published: Monday, November 3, 2025

This is a blog I wish every family entering hospice could read. Families often tell us, “I wish I had known…” or “I wish someone had told me…” when a loved one begins hospice care – and those words stay with me.

My goal is to help families and caregivers feel prepared, confident and supported through one of life’s most tender chapters This hospice care guide offers insights and encouragement to help families navigate this season with compassion and confidence.

The advice in this guide is the same guidance I share with my friends when they call me to tell me their parent, sibling, or friend has entered hospice.  Whether you’re just beginning this journey or walking alongside someone who is, I hope these insights bring comfort, clarity, and peace of mind.

Navigating hospice care with compassion and confidence: A guide for families

When a loved one enters hospice care, it can feel overwhelming—but it can also be a time of deep connection, love, and meaningful support. Hospice is not just about medical care; it’s about honoring the person’s life, values, and wishes. Here are some thoughtful ways to approach this journey with grace and clarity.

1. Welcome the whole care team

Our Hospice teams are made up of professionals with diverse expertise. Nurses, social workers, chaplains, aides, physicians, volunteers and more play a vital role in supporting your loved one and your family. Embrace their presence and lean on their knowledge. They’re here to help you navigate this time with compassion and dignity.

Helpful questions to ask the care team:

  1. What can we expect in the coming days or weeks?
  2. How can we best manage comfort and pain?
  3. What does emotional or spiritual support encompass?
  4. What signs should we look for that indicate changes in condition?
  5. How can we make the environment more peaceful and personalized?

2. Prioritize visits and meaningful connections

Time becomes especially precious in hospice. Encourage family and friends to visit sooner rather than later, if your loved one feels up to visits. These moments of connection—sharing stories, laughter, or simply sitting together—can be deeply comforting for everyone involved. Remember, connection is one of the greatest gifts you can give during hospice care.

3. Talk about preferences

It’s okay to ask questions that feel tender or even difficult. Giving your loved one the opportunity to express how they want their final days to be can be empowering and reassuring.

Consider asking:

  1. What kind of atmosphere feels most comforting to you?
  2. Do you prefer quiet or music?
  3. Are there scents or items that bring you peace?
  4. Who would you like to be present?

Having these conversations early can help ensure your loved one’s wishes are honored, your family and care team feel confident, and the environment remains calm and comforting.

4. Consider caregiving support

Hiring a professional caregiver, utilizing hospice volunteers, or allowing friends and family to help with care—even for a few hours a day—can be a gift. It allows family members to focus on being emotionally present rather than physically overwhelmed. This support can ease stress and create space for meaningful moments, quiet reflection, or time to decompress.

5. Be an advocate for your loved one

You know your loved one better than anyone. If something doesn’t feel right, speak up. Being an advocate ensures that your loved one receives the personalized care and dignity they deserve. The care team values your insights and wants to collaborate with you to provide the best possible experience. Your voice matters because no one knows your loved one as well as you.

Finding comfort in hospice care

Hospice is not just an ending. It’s a sacred chapter of life. It’s a time to reflect, to connect, and to love deeply. By embracing the support around you, asking thoughtful questions, and honoring your loved one’s wishes, you help create a space of peace and dignity.
