We all know how irritating it is when we’re having a bad hair day, but can you imagine how it must feel to be losing your hair, and possibly even your hope? The Cancer Center at Northeast Georgia Medical Center (NGMC) and The American Cancer Society are sponsoring the fourth annual “A Good Hair Day” Wig Drive and, with your donations, we can help restore hope to cancer patients who are battling the emotional and physical effects of chemotherapy.

Jerry Fordham wasn’t truly alarmed when he started losing weight two years ago, but, by December of 2012, he was down 80 pounds. Unaware of the cancer in his bladder, but getting weaker by the day, he knew something wasn’t right. Tests performed by John McHugh, MD, a urologist with Northeast Georgia Urological Associates, confirmed his fear: Fordham had bladder cancer which had spread to the ureter – the tube that carries urine from the kidney to the bladder.

The Georgia Society of Clinical Oncology (GASCO) and the Center for Oncology, Research and Education (Georgia CORE) have announced that the first recipient of the Matt Mumber, MD Visionary Award is Lisa Bridges, a nurse and Certified Breast Cancer Navigator at Northeast Georgia Medical Center (NGMC). This recognition also comes with a $2,000 grant funded by GASCO and Georgia CORE, founding partners of Cancer Patient Navigators of Georgia (CPNG).

The American Cancer Society (ACS), in partnership with Northeast Georgia Medical Center (NGMC), is offering the community a chance to take a proactive role in cancer prevention. The ACS is seeking “champions” in the Gainesville area who are interested in participating and helping spread the word about an upcoming Cancer Prevention Study-3 (CPS-3) – a historic nationwide study designed to help researchers better understand the genetic, environmental and lifestyle factors that cause or prevent cancer.

The Cancer Center at Northeast Georgia Medical Center (NGMC) is presenting a free prostate health seminar, “Know Your Stats About Prostate Cancer,” in which a panel of physicians will discuss screening, prevention and treatment options for prostate cancer. The panel includes physicians from the following specialties: urology, radiation oncology and medical oncology.

The Cancer Center at Northeast Georgia Medical Center (NGMC) is pleased to announce that a new type of immunotherapy is now available for patients with prostate cancer. The cancer vaccine sipuleucel-T, commercially branded as Provenge, is offered to prostate cancer patients through two local oncology practices, Northeast Georgia Diagnostic Clinic and The Longstreet Clinic, P.C., both of which are affiliated with the Cancer Center at NGMC.

The Cancer Center at Northeast Georgia Medical Center (NGMC) recently received another three-year accreditation with commendation from the American College of Surgeons’ Commission on Cancer (CoC).
