Minimally Invasive Valve Surgery

Northeast Georgia Medical Center now offers advanced minimally invasive mitral and aortic valve reconstruction.  Both procedures require smaller incisions and less bone spreading than traditional procedures.

Benefits:

  • Smaller incisions (2 inches vs.. 6 - 12 inches)

  • Less bone spreading (size of a dime vs. size of an orange)

  • Shorter hospital stays

  • Quicker return to normal activities

  • Less pain and scarring

  • Less risk of infection

  • Less blood loss and fewer transfusions

Step-by-Step Surgery:

  1. A cardiac anesthesiologist safely sedates you while the clinical staff prepares for surgery.

  2. The surgeon makes a small incision, about the width of a dime, to create an opening to access the heart.

  3. A machine takes control of your heartbeat and breathing while a video scope is inserted through another small incision, which allows the surgeon to see your heart on a video monitor.

  4. The surgeon finds the diseased valve, inspects it and reconstructs it using small, specialized instruments.

  5. You're left with a valve that's as close to its natural state as possible, and very little pain or scarring!
