Arteries can harden and narrow anywhere in the body: from the legs to major organs such as the stomach or the kidneys. When this happens, the Vascular Center of Northeast Georgia Physicians Group, in partnership with Georgia Heart Institute, is here to help.
When blood flow is restricted to the body’s limbs or major organs, it can cause discomfort, pain and swelling, and it can lead to organ failure or other significant complications. Our vascular surgeons are exceptionally experienced with providing angioplasty and stenting to help restore blood flow.
Angioplasty and stenting are performed in our state-of-the-art endovascular suite, offering patients the most innovative technology and equipment to ensure a high-quality outcome.
What are vascular angioplasty and stenting?
Angioplasty is a minimally invasive procedure that opens blocked arteries and restores blood flow through the veins and arteries in the body. During a vascular angioplasty procedure, the surgeon will make a small incision and thread a tiny catheter into the bloodstream, navigating it to the obstructed artery. Once the catheter is in place, a tiny balloon is inflated in the narrowed or blocked space of the artery, restoring the normal flow of blood.
Sometimes, a stent will also be put into place. A stent is a slender mesh tube that fortifies the newly opened artery, reducing the risk that the artery will narrow or clog again.
What is the success rate of vascular angioplasty?
The success of angioplasty depends on how advanced your atherosclerosis—the term for hardened and narrowed arteries—has become. If you have many narrowed or blocked arteries throughout your heart or body, you may need additional interventions down the road. After surgery, taking the medication prescribed by your cardiologist or vascular surgeon and adapting your lifestyle will help you achieve more lasting outcomes.
