Tricuspid valve regurgitation, also called leaky tricuspid valve, is a complex heart condition that occurs when the tricuspid valve of the heart doesn’t close properly. This malfunction causes blood to abnormally flow “backwards” from the right ventricle into other areas of the heart. This backward flow prevents blood from reaching the lungs and, if untreated, can lead to complications including atrial fibrillation (AFib) and heart damage. To restore normal blood flow and preserve heart function, our heart surgeons and interventional cardiologists may recommend transcatheter tricuspid valve replacement as an alternative to traditional open-heart surgery.

At Georgia Heart Institute, we are leading experts in innovative treatments for tricuspid valve disease, with comprehensive experience in both minimally invasive catheter-based treatments and robotic heart surgery.

What are the signs and symptoms of tricuspid valve disease?

Tricuspid valve disease occurs more frequently in older adults. People with tricuspid valve disease may experience:

  • Shortness of breath
  • Fatigue
  • Abnormal heart rhythms, like increased heart rate
  • Swelling in the legs, feet or abdomen
  • Pulsations in the neck

Who is a candidate for a transcatheter tricuspid valve replacement?

Tricuspid valve replacement is typically recommended for patients with severe tricuspid valve disease who are showing symptoms despite medication. This may include people who have additional health concerns or have had previous cardiac events or complications.

We will work with you to choose the best path forward for your condition. For those whose tricuspid valve cannot be repaired, we offer interventions to replace the valve to keep your heart as healthy as possible.

EVOQUE

EVOQUE is a minimally invasive tricuspid valve replacement system used to repair or replace the tricuspid valve without the need for open-heart surgery. This groundbreaking procedure is catheter-based and often results in more effective outcomes, fewer complications, shorter hospital stays and significantly quicker recovery time. The EVOQUE system substantially improves patients’ symptoms and their quality of life. Georgia Heart Institute has successfully performed dozens of transcatheter therapy procedures using the EVOQUE system and strives to be the leader in our region with specialized technologies.
