The Northeast Georgia Regional STEMI System is a collaboration between NGMC's Emergency Rooms, Cath Lab and EMS departments in 18 counties designed to treat your heart attack as quickly as possible. We boast some of the fastest heart attack response times in the nation.

Here's how it works:

  • EMS workers transmit your EKG from the ambulance to the Emergency Room while you are en route.
  • On-call physicians read the EKG to determine if you're suffering a particularly severe heart attack, known as a STEMI (S-T Elevation Myocardial Infarction).
  • When you arrive at the hospital, a team is standing by to rush you past the ER and into the Cath Lab.
  • You are sedated as an interventional cardiologist clears the blockages in your arteries and restores blood flow to your heart.

A Model for STEMI Treatment in Georgia

Under the leadership of Northeast Georgia Medical Center, the Northeast Georgia Regional STEMI System has laid the foundation for coordinated out-of-hospital heart attack response in Georgia and is being used as a model nationwide. Since 2009, the Northeast Georgia Regional STEMI System has grown from a one-county, one-hospital service to an 18-county, 13-hospital service will all following the same treatment protocol. It has served as the driving force behind state legislation to establish cardiac care centers in Georgia and a three-level designation system for those centers.
