Northeast Georgia Medical Center (NGMC) has recently been awarded national certification as a Primary Stroke Center for the second year in a row by DNV Healthcare.
NGMC is the only stroke program in the state of Georgia, and one of only 41 in the nation, to be certified by DNV as a Primary Stroke Center.
DNV’s Primary Stroke Center Certification program incorporates elements from its NIAHO® hospital accreditation standards as well as requirements from the Guidelines of the Brain Attack Coalition and Recommendations of the American Stroke Association.
To achieve this certification, DNV surveyors reviewed actual and potential patient outcomes, as well as required treatment processes. They assessed the care and services provided at NGMC, including the appropriateness of the care and services within the context of the stroke certification requirements. They also visited patient care settings, including inpatient units and the emergency, imaging and rehabilitation departments, and reviewed clinical records, staff records and other documentation necessary to validate information gained from observations and interviews.
“We are honored to again receive this national certification as a Primary Stroke Center. It demonstrates the commitment and dedication of our staff to provide the highest quality stroke care possible,” says Carol Burrell, President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Northeast Georgia Health System.
“This accreditation further emphasizes our organization’s continuous goal to improve the quality of stroke care,” adds LaRoy Penix, MD, a neurologist with Northeast Georgia Physicians Group Neurology and medical director of NGMC’s Stroke Program. “It is a testimony to the clinical expertise and collaboration we have across the stroke continuum. From the EMS first responders to our Emergency Department and inpatient staff to our rehabilitation therapists, we are all vested in the care and recovery of our stroke patients.”
In addition to the Primary Stroke Center Certification, Northeast Georgia Medical Center also received two other awards for its commitment to stroke care in March: the Get With The Guidelines® - Stroke Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award from the American Heart Association and the Georgia Coverdell Acute Stroke Registry's "Star Award."
