The organization is composed of heart disease patients and their spouses, health professionals and other persons who are interested in helping people deal with emotional recovery from heart disease. Mended Hearts members can serve in two ways: they can either become accredited members who visit heart disease patients in the hospital, at home, via telephone or through the Internet and/or they can become supporting members who attend monthly support and education meetings. Members must have heart disease to be able to visit patients in the hospital. Other members can spend time in the waiting areas visiting with a patient’s family members and loved ones. Though the organization is not part of Northeast Georgia Medical Center (NGMC), the local chapter, Northeast Georgia Mended Hearts, does have the hospital’s support, and its members visit patients in the Ronnie Green Heart Center. While they are not allowed to dispense any medial advice, visiting members can share their own experiences, provide moral support and share health education materials with patients and their family members. Northeast Georgia Mended Hearts meetings are held the first Tuesday of each month at 6 p.m. in Private Dining Room B in the cafeteria on the NGMC Main Campus.
