Aquatic physical therapy is a specialized form of physical therapy which combines therapeutic exercise with the benefits of water. The water provides a safe and effective method for healing injuries and increasing function. Because aquatic therapy is performed in a minimal gravity environment, each patient can expect therapy that is enjoyable with less impact and discomfort than traditional methods. Best of all, aquatic therapy can be used even if the patient does not know how to swim. After patients complete our aquatic therapy program, they may transition to a land-based physical therapy program or a community aquatic exercise class available at our facility. Benefits of Aquatic Therapy: · Warm water facilitates muscle relaxation and decreases pain. · Buoyancy of water greatly reduces body mass and provides support which allows for easier and less painful movement. · Viscosity of water provides resistance for increasing strength and stability. · Warm water provides an enjoyable medium in which to exercise, thus increasing a patient’s confidence. ·Participation in aquatic therapy provides an easier transition to land therapy as well as an excellent medium to progress function. ·Aquatic therapy can provide an earlier entrance into the rehabilitation process, which may improve the patient’s outcome.
