Diabetes Education

Classes and Events

The Diabetes Education Program is recognized by the American Diabetes Association for quality self-management education.  A comprehensive range of educational programs is offered to people with diabetes and their families by certified diabetes educators, registered nurses, and registered dietitians.

Diabetes Mellitus Type 1 and Type 2
Both individual and group sessions are available to aid participants in understanding and managing their diabetes.  The program includes:

§         An assessment of individual education needs
§         An individualized session with a registered dietitian to set up a
meal plan
§         Instruction in blood glucose monitoring
§         Information on medications and instruction on insulin administration
§         Group classes covering all areas of diabetes management
§         Follow-up counseling until personal goals are met

Gestational Diabetes Class
A diabetes educator/dietitian completes an individual assessment and meal plan for each participant.  A group class is conducted to teach the women and their families meal planning and methods to control blood glucose during pregnancy.

Classes:  Tuesdays 1-3 pm   Pre-registration required. Call 678-343-4887

Insulin Pump Program and Continuous Glucose Sensor
For people requiring insulin, intensive diabetes management is offered.  The sensor monitors blood glucose levels 288 times a day for a three day period and aids in adjusting insulin dosages.  The insulin pump provides flexibility in lifestyle for those motivated to achieve good glucose control

Diabetes Support Group
Informative topics on current diabetes care and fellowship are offered through the Diabetes Support Group.  The Diabetes Support Group meets the third Thursday of every month except July and December. The morning group meets at 10 am in the Blue Ridge Room and in the evening at 7 p.m. in the Diabetes Classroom at the Lanier Park Campus, 675 White Sulphur Road, Gainesville, Georgia. Support Group for Children and Adolescents with Diabetes
This is a support group for children and adolescents with diabetes and their parents, featuring special activities with the youth at each meeting.  This support group meets the first Monday of every other month in the Diabetes Education Classroom, located at the Lanier Park campus. This is a free program.
