How does NGHS measure patient satisfaction?

In order to get a patient’s honest and unpressured opinion about his or her care, Northeast Georgia Health System (NGHS) contracts an outside company, HealthStream, to survey patients and collect the results.  HealthStream administers two different standard surveys:

  • HCAHPS - The Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems was developed by the federal government to be the first national, standardized, publicly reported survey of inpatients' perspectives of hospital care.  The survey asks discharged patients questions about their recent health care.  Question topics range from communication with nurses and doctors, to the cleanliness of the healthcare environment.  Learn more about the conception and methodology of HCAHPS here.

  • CAHPS - The Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems measures outpatient and emergency department patients' experience using processes simlar to HCAHPS.  Learn more about CAHPS here.
