GAINESVILLE, Ga. – Northeast Georgia Medical Center (NGMC) is pleased to announce LoRita “Rita” Shingleton, RN, CBN, as the new program manager of the Bariatric Weight Loss Center.
In this role, Shingleton is responsible for managing the overall operations of NGMC’s bariatric program, including the inpatient surgical, outpatient surgical and non-surgical weight loss programs.
Before relocating to Georgia, Shingleton worked as the nurse manager for the emergency department at St. Francis Hospital in Memphis, Tenn. Prior to that, she served in other nursing and managerial positions, including her previous role as bariatric coordinator at Emory Johns Creek Hospital from 2006 to 2008.
"We are excited to have Rita as our new bariatric program manager,” says Karen Posea, RN, director of acute care medical and surgical nursing services at NGMC. “Rita has extensive background in bariatric program management and as a previous bariatric surgery patient, she offers a unique perspective to our patients because she truly understands the journey, struggles and triumphs a bariatric patient feels.”
“It was during my time in the role as bariatric coordinator at Emory Johns Creek that I realized my true calling and my passion for the bariatric patient,” says Shingleton. “Since I have experienced weight loss surgery, I feel a closeness and a bond with the people I meet who have either had surgery or are thinking about it. I am 10 years post-gastric bypass, and I have remained successful. I love telling people about my journey and sharing with them how they, too, can be successful.”
Shingleton is a member of the National Association for Bariatric Nurses (NABN) and the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS), through which she has achieved designation as a Certified Bariatric Nurse (CBN). She also holds membership with the Obesity Action Coalition (OAC) and the Emergency Nurse Association (ENA). She completed her training as a registered nurse (RN) in 2000, but started her nursing career in 1973 as a licensed practical nurse (LPN).
Shingleton has been married to Jerry Shingleton for 32 years. She has one stepdaughter and two grandchildren. “We are both happy to be back in Georgia, reconnecting with our friends and exploring the Gainesville area,” she says. “We find the people here to be very friendly and welcoming. I am extremely happy to be a part of Northeast Georgia Health System.”
