Northeast Georgia Medical Center (NGMC) has recently been awarded national certification as a Primary Stroke Center for the second year in a row by DNV Healthcare.

May is National Stroke Awareness Month, a time to educate the public and spread awareness about stroke prevention, symptom recognition and recovery. From 1998 to 2008, the number of stroke deaths fell by 19 percent. This year, the National Stroke Association and Northeast Georgia Medical Center hope to continue to reduce stroke deaths and disability by educating the public to recognize stroke symptoms, and to Act F.A.S.T. to save a life.

Martin, Ga., resident Judith Perretta recently underwent deep brain stimulation (DBS) to relieve the intensity of her tremors.
Because her tremors had gotten so bad, Judith could no longer participate in some of the activities she loved the most, such as boating, shopping and eating lunch with friends, without feeling embarrassed. Now, thanks to her DBS procedure, she is back to being a "live wire," as her husband calls her, once again.

Northeast Georgia Medical Center (NGMC) recently received two awards for stroke care: the Get With The Guidelines®-Stroke Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award from the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association and the 2012 “Star Award” from the Georgia Coverdell Acute Stroke Registry (GCASR).
