For more than 30 years, the physician specialists and highly-trained staff of the Radiation Therapy department at The Cancer Center at Northeast Georgia Medical Center have provided compassionate, experienced care for thousands of patients throughout northeast Georgia. Our Radiation Therapy department offers the latest, state-of-the-art treatment technologies including therapies which deliver maximum doses of radiation with a decreased risk of side effects including:
Image Guided Radiation Therapy (IGRT):
- located at both the Toccoa Cancer Center and Main Campus in Gainesville, IGRT enables physicians to pinpoint tumors with great accuracy
- provides ability to adjust the radiation beam to the tumor’s exact location
- spares healthy tissue
- applicable for some prostate, abdominal, lung, head and neck and brain tumors.
Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT):
- an intense, controlled dose of radiation that allows treatment in sensitive areas
- delivers high doses of radiation in a very precise way
- spares more of the surrounding healthy tissue
- fewer side effects as compared to traditional external radiation therapy
Low-Dose Rate Brachytherapy (LDR):
- requires the radiation source to be permanently inserted into the patient
- delivers radiation slowly, over a few days, and is often performed as an outpatient procedure
- prostate seed implants are a common example of LDR; prostate seed implants are radioactive implants that treat prostate cancer with fewer side effects such as urinary incontinence and impotence.
High-Dose Rate Brachytherapy (HDR):
- involves temporarily inserting the source of radiation directly at or very near a tumor site
- limits amount of healthy tissue exposed to radiation and radiates the site of the cancer
- examples of HDR include:
MammoSite, a revolutionary method used to treat patients with early stage breast cancer by delivering radiation directly to the site of a breast tumor following a lumpectomy
GliaSite, an internal therapy that delivers radiation directly at the site of a brain tumor following the surgical removal of the brain tumor(s) and the insertion of a temporary devise to instill the radiation (which is removed after treatment)
In addition to the radiation therapy treatments above, The Cancer Center at NGMC also offers radiopharmaceuticals and radiation therapy clinical trials. The therapies are offered at both the Cancer Center’s Gainesville and Toccoa locations.
